Subway Sparrow
There’s a sparrow in the subway
He must have followed someone down the stairs
He’s flying off the handle
Fallen down a manhole and landed here
Lost you know it’s claustrophobic
Trying to find a glowing exit sign
This sparrow in the subway
Doesn’t know in which direction he should fly
And I - Sometimes I feel underground
Like all these bad things just keep me down
And I’ve got little wings
But they don’t do a thing
And all that I know how to do is stand in front of you and sing
My grandma had a clock
She kept it in the kitchen
Every hour chimed
And out a little window came a little bird
Who whistled her the time
Buried deep inside for minutes 1 through 59 he stayed
That bird inside the box
I don’t know what it was he did to pass the days
And I - Sometimes I feel underground
Like all these bad things just keep me down
And I’ve got little wings
But they don’t do a thing
And all that I know how to do is come out every now and then and sing
I didn’t want to hurt you so I put you on a perch behind a key
And sometimes you’d just watch me
Wondering why I always kept you at arms reach
I finally got the last word
But in the end, it never seemed enough
I wonder if it’s backwards
If someone sets you free, then is it love?
And I - Sometimes I’m the one inside a cage
And you - Sometimes you’re here too with me these days
And we’ve got little wings
But they don’t do a thing
And I can’t find the right words
So all that I can do for you is sing
There’s a world of subway birds
And all that we can do is sing
