I was just down at the Susquehanna Folk Festival, where I won their songwriting contest last year. Despite driving about 22 hours in a weekend, I had an amazing time with some fantastic performers and new friends. I'll blog about it soon, but highlights include a workshop in a Victorian parlor, a late night trip to Waffle House, phoning my mom from stage and getting the crowd to wish her a "happy lesbian jewish-wiccan mother's day", and debuting some songs from my new musical - which apparently got everyone planning roadtrips up to Toronto to see it. Filled with crabcakes and sunburned, but all shades of happy.

I've been working full-tilt on "My Mother's Lesbian Jewish-Wiccan Wedding" - a new musical comedy in The Toronto Fringe Festival, July 1-12. Based on the true story of how my mom came out to me, met her partner and got married, it features around 20 completely new songs, a cast of 7 and a live band - all at Bread and Circus in Kensington Market (299 August Ave.) - one of my favourite venues.

Irene Carl and I wrote the script and Andrew Lamb is directing - the cast is now finalized and the band is made up of Sarah Calvert, Jeff Daze and David Pontello. Irene and I are also acting in and producing the show which means we're both getting about 2 hours of sleep a night - but it's worth it - we're really proud of the script and songs and I think it's going to be great (crossing fingers and knocking on wood). I'm back from my WEST OF WHEREVER TOUR having played a ton of house concerts in Alberta, as part of the Home Routes house concerts tour, and then cruising through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC. For the whole story, check out the BLOG section above.

Here's the top 10 things that happened out West:

1. Met a pet pig named Buella in Olds, who lost her tail to coyotes
2. Played for my dad for the first time ever in Medicine Hat
3. Bought my first cowboy shirt
4. Got my car broken into in Vancouver - and all they stole was a backpack filled with 30 David Hein CDs, a book on musical theatre, and 6 cat toys
5. Got stuck in the snow in the middle of the Rockies
6. Got told that I "looked a lot like Stephen Harper"
7. Played on two internet TV shows on oldstv.com and on the vancouver city limits youtube channel on youtube.com
8. Came very close to getting attacked by a bear (okay, really, I just saw bear markings, but still...)
9. Got pulled over twice by the police... apparently just to discuss what kind of music I played
10. Played some amazing house concerts - literally a new living room every night - and met some outstanding people there. Check out homeroutes.ca if you're interested in getting involved - either attending or hosting - and tell them I sent you!

Last weekend I performed as a Canadian finalist in the Mountain Stage New Song Contest - which is cool for many reasons - the first is that one of my favourite cassettes as a kid was a Mountain Stage "Canadian" live recording featuring Blue Rodeo, Barenaked Ladies, Moxy Fruvous, Cowboy Junkies, Bruce Cockburn, and more. Second, I got to play at the Ottawa Folk Fest with the likes of Broken Social Scene, Sarah harmer, Rufus Wainwright and more. And third, I shared the stage with some amazing other songwriters from across Canada like Andy Sheppard, Linda M, Mary Knickle, Lynne Hanson, Hannah and her Sisters, Tanya Davis, Daniel Casavant, Steve Brockley and Koko Bonaparte. I didn't win, but was in very good company and won some excellent friends - please give it up for Tanya Davis, who'll be representing us canucks down south.
